I'm currently arguing with the my show co-creator, our show is May 10
and she wants to have all the dancers introduced individually at the finale, whether or not
they were part of a group in the show.
I always thought that groups were introduced and called up to take a bow
together, solo dancers come up individually..am I wrong on the etiquette on this one?
She's insisting that we do it her way, I have a tendency to think she does'nt know
as much as she thinks she does about planning a show...she did'nt want to
even have a finale and I had to make a stink before she listened to me!
GAH!
where's my naproxen??

Re: how to introduce troupes vs solo artists..and what a headache I have..
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 4:07 PMMaria,
I have seen it done both ways in other dance forms. I have also done both.
Depending on the venue, audience, time constraints, and other factors, I choose
one or the other.
Once, an audience member told me that it was a nice touch to introduce each troupe member individually.
I guess, it boils down to personal preference and circumstances, not necessarily a matter of right or wrong.
If your co-creator insists on introducing individually the troupe members, don't sweat the small stuff.
Truly not worth getting distraught or a headache over this. :0)

Re: how to introduce troupes vs solo artists..and what a headache I have..
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 4:23 PMPersonally I think it's silly to name every single dancer onstage; if they're part of a troupe or company, then they are there representing that troupe or company, not themselves. The whole point of being in a troupe is to create something together under one entity.
I also think it sounds unprofessional to name every dancer onstage this way. Maybe in the program you could name every dancer (ex. "The Nelly Bellies, featuring Alice, Sally, Julie and Robin") and that way every dancer can take one home and know her name is in it? I've seen that done in all styles, including the San Francisco Ballet, and thought that was nice. -

Re: how to introduce troupes vs solo artists..and what a headache I have..
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 8:49 AMI'm with GP on this one. Having names in the program gives everyone the individual recognition.
I've rarely attended a show that didn't go on too long. Adding individual names to the troupes could add on even more time.
I think though that bringing everyone up on stage at the end is a GREAT idea. A lovely way to recognize their contribution, it creates a feeling of camaraderie on the stage amongst the performers who now are not just "one person after another" but recognized together and sharing space...and for those really long shows- it keeps people around! ;) -

Re: how to introduce troupes vs solo artists..and what a headache I have..
Sat, April 26, 2008 - 6:00 AMI think either way is fine, the question of time becomes an issue. Just how many troupes are there with how many members? It could become really long-winded to introduce each member of the troupe. I would think a comprimise would be to announce "Troupe Super with X, Y, Z and A, B, C". You want to make sure the troupe name gets announced and that dancers take the stage together, even if each individual name is being announced.
AND, make sure you thank and acknowledge your technical crew (lighting, sound, backstage...) I hate when people forget to recognize their techies. -

Re: how to introduce troupes vs solo artists..and what a headache I have..
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 9:48 AMI was going to say the same thing about the time contraints....if you've got a lot of troups with many members, it's going to drag out the finale.
Personally, I agree with others that say acknoledge the troupes by troupe name and soloists by how-ever they are called.
As an audience member...I personally don't like the individual names for groups. It takes forever, I can't hear over the clapping and music and rustling of audience members, and a lot of times with Belly Dancers, they've selected a stage name. So, if you wanted to follow up with a troupe, say on line, you have to auditorilly sift through all the stuff I mentioned above, try and listen for a name...and if you were looking for a specific troupe member name ... how many Adira, Adrina, Farra, Farrah, Amira, Amirah, Deliah, Delilia, Dehlina, Sadira, Sadirah, etc do you know ... you get my point.
I say performers should be introduced by their advertising name.
Oh, another example...you don't see fliers for "Max, Yvette, Deb, Amber, Teri, Kristen, Andrea, Erin, Dee Dee, Tanja, Sarah, Kristin, Holly, Gina, Lee, Rose, Sami, Debbie, Lisa, Jill, Erica performing at Tribal Con!" ... you see "Ultra Gypsy performing at Tribal Con".
My 2 cents.

Re: how to introduce troupes vs solo artists..and what a headache I have..
Mon, April 28, 2008 - 12:40 AMI personally think listing every single troup member by name at the finally is long, boring and time consuming. If there is, say, 5 members or less, then introducing them as "Troup X, featuring A, B, C, D, E." as they all walk onstage is usually fine, since it doesn't really take much more time, but having each person walk on stage while their name is being called will unnecessarily draw out what should be the big bang finalle. If individual names MUST be mentioned somewhere, make a program with the names of troups and then the names of the dancers.
Just my personal oppinions, after sitting through and being involved in both kinds :)

Re: how to introduce troupes vs solo artists..and what a headache I have..
Tue, April 29, 2008 - 11:10 AMYou could ask the troupe directors how they prefer to be introduced. It's entirely possible that they only want to be known as a group and not individuals.
You could also have a printed program with every dancer listed and only announce the name of the troupe in the finale.

Re: how to introduce troupes vs solo artists..and what a headache I have..
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 3:56 PMAs a member of a troupe I would not *want* to be named individually. If I wanted that I'd dance solo.
Do you have a printed programme? List the names in there. Or better yet let the dancers and troupe deceided for themselves.
