Question of the Day..........

topic posted Mon, January 14, 2008 - 3:20 PM by
Why do some many dancers have to ruin bellydance with stupid flippin' cattiness, drama, cliques, nasty comments and rudeness???

I had a very good friend of mine tell me she recently took a class with a teacher who was seriously bashing OTHER teachers! And some of these teachers I have taken or am taking classes with and they are freakin fantastic...

I mean I thought in the belly dance community teachers encourage students to study with other teachers??

Sometimes crap like this makes me want to stop dancing..................

    Hi Zehara,
I've also been having the same question for a long time... I second to the post: insecrity! I first expected more from the community - maybe I was a bit naive and too nice?-, so some things I've experienced through dancing like your post, were just so disapointing that actually I am now a bit away from dancing; BUT I did meet very nice inpiring teachers/dancers, too.

Hahaha..I Dunno..But I do recall as a young girl taking dance classes in L.A. ...That even the most prolific of dance teachers [ ie one choreographer for MGM Studios whose weekly classes I attended ] were really catty about any competition. I remember being shocked as this same guy who was my ballet/jazz/flamenco teacher (and whom I'd thought was "God" because he was so damn good at what he did )on one occasion made comments to me in private about another male teacher whose classes I was also enrolled in, calling him an "asshole" and a "gimp" who couldn't dance his way out of 'yesterday'.....hahaha! Now when I remember it, I get a good laugh, but at that time I just kept very quiet, felt bad and weird as I wondered how grown men could behave in this way. Yes...MEN not only women engage in this kind of thing and it seems that this is, in fact, normal in the highly competitive world of dance. As far as I have observed, bellydancers are tame compared to many other groups. Man I've seen 'cut throat' behaviour that would curl your nosehairs - in the social circles of Ballet, Flamenco, Polynesian, Salsa, and especially....BALLROOM! Actually, bellydancers might need to grow more balls...hahaha!

I was actually wondering the same thing yesterday as I watched the finale of "America's Best Dance Crew". Throughout the whole season, all of the dance crews were so supportive of each other, and rather than trying to 'beat' each other, they just wanted to go out and do their best. Even when it was down to two teams, they didn't get snarky and it seemed like they truly supported each other. And all the crews seemed like one big family.

Why can't we do that? Maybe it is skill level and insecurity. If deep down we know that we aren't as good as we would like to be, we turn that outwards and criticize other people.
I wish it wasn't that way though....

It's funny you mentioned that because I was thinking the exact same thing when I was watching. Locally, we don't have a bellydance community that's very supportive of it's own. Some are, but for the most part, there are walls up all over the place, grudges, and all kinds of nonsense I don't care to get into. I'm thankful for what little support what few locals give each other... and am doing my very best to not care about the ones who aren't supportive, genuine and respectful.

keep in mind with reality tv shows what you see is what the producers want you to see. i've never seen the show your talking about, don't have any tv right now. but i do know from watching/reading about other shows and knowing people that have been on some that the way those shows are edited, the reality that they present is usually nothing like what actually happened. But here's hoping that they really did support each other and that we can too.

Erin, what you say is so true. I never believe anything I see on TV [especially if its in the news...hahaha!] because its always been understood that what goes on in front of TV cameras is fake, fake fake. The world of professional arts & entertainment is extremely brutal in its competitive nature and I don't see how this [natural] fact will change anytime soon. At the "community" level, this dance may be one thing...at the professional level, its really quite another. But I will say that I am very lucky to have some good, solid [longtime] friendships with other professional dancers and that competing in the bellydance market hasn't come between us [so far]. Hopefully, our characters are strong enough to weather all the insanity that comes along with this type of occupation, and that we are more inclined to value one another as fellow human beings more than anything else.

                Hi Sarita and fellow Erin,

The thing about 'America's Best Dance Crew', is that it's not just another reality show (it seems). Because the announcer, or host, or whoever she was, was TRYING to get them to get competitive. it wasn't the editing. She would actually say, "What are you going to do to beat this other crew? How can you beat them?" And the dance crews would respond, "You know, they are so awesome. We just want to go out and do our best, and we know they will do the same. We love these guys, and we just want to go out and have some fun."

Now, you know reality shows would rather show drama than comraderie, but these guys just wanted to do their best and didn't play the 'reality show game'. If there was drama to edit in there, you know the producers would have done it. But the crews just stayed supportive. Didn't let it happen. We need to be this way.

Watching that show was actually pretty inspiring. I don't know if being on television had anything to do with their personalities altering, and the fact that "America" was voting for them making them more "likable"... but honestly I believe that those crews ended up being amazing (because they were), and getting that far to showcase their talent like that because of thier attitudes. Going out and doing their best and creating with one another... not getting caught up in drama and negativity to other people. Sometimes when I hear bullshit happening in my community I wonder why people don't understand that everyone is in this (bellydancing) for the same flippin' reasons, and we probably have a lot more in common than we really know.

        amen to needing more chocolate!!!!!

I agree that the drama, backstabbing, etc need to stop....sometimes it's hard when your close friends are the victims of the BS-I personally am incredibly vocal when one of my friends is wrongly "attacked"....which unfortunately can sometimes fuel NEW and IMPROVED drama!

I made a personal vow to try my damnedest to not be negative. Granted i have a few compadres I can talk to when I need to vent but they are trusted friends and not the GP.

I don't get the whole teacher bashing teacher thing either...I'm all for trying different instructors out and learning as much as possible. i just wish I had more money to go to ALL of the teachers in my area!!!

You effin' rock, Obsidia. Good for you.

I tell ya... it's unreal how far some people go with TeH DrAmAh. Really. Ever just want to tell someone to stop wasting time with the BS, and go use the time... to, oh, I don't know... rehearse?? Dance? Sew something? Bake some effin' cookies or something? Or if ya can't do any of that, go outside and throw rusty lawn darts at each other?
