Issue with teacher

I have been with the same bellydance teacher for about 2 years now, She is a wonderful person but I am in a total funk as far as dancing goes. I like to perform, but we are in the middle of at least 5 new choreography's that never get hammered down. There is no discipline on her part to get one done to perfection before moving on. I like to perform but would like to look like I know what Im doing. I have lost my lust for the dance at least for the time being. I just spent a truckload of money on a costume that I want to wear for a big event at the end of the year as a soloist within her troupe so I stay. But how do II bring myself out of this funk...I wanted to go to Glendale in May for the BDSS LA Raqs but ????? Anybody else have this problem??? Any suggestions??

Thanks

" I like to perform but would like to look like I know what Im doing."

    Well that's good!!!

Have you considered maybe going to take some classes elsewhere for a bit? Break up the "old routine" ... put some freshness back in yo' dance world?

If she has 5 choreographies that are still in the creation process... maybe you can talk to her about *one* of them? Maybe with some kindness and friendly concern, you can explain to her how much you'd love to see one make it from start to finish? She doesn't sound mean and unreasonable (thank your lucky starts for that!!!). Maybe just be up front, in a respectful, student to teacher dialog?

I had a similar and opposite situation at the same time. The teacher would end up teaching the same choreography several times to get new people to perform in that piece, then have a couple new choreographies added into the haflas. The new choreographies were hardly finished and looked non-professional and I was sick of paying over and over again to learn old choreographies, which still looked non-professional because of the newer groups of people added.

After I started teaching, I found out this was a great way for a majority of students to learn. I was too serious about my dancing and had to seek out another teacher and now that I teach, I use a COMPLETELY different format. Her way did make many students happy, give them the chance to perform on a non-professional level and give the students motivation to get better and work harder. I still dance at her hafla's, but only as a solo guest artist. So I get everything I could have asked for! Also, she's helped out the community by giving my students a place to perform if they wish!

So, Yah! Taaj has a great recommendation. Go elsewhere. Your needs and style do not match this teacher's but don't burn bridges. She does what she does for a reason. It's really tough being a teacher. If you stay on good terms and let her know what you're doing, perhaps she'll still let you perform your solo!
