Venting........
A legendary bellydancer whom I once studied with, had me cornered at a Hafla. She had a grudge becuase I quit her classes, as she told me I was fat!
She was drunk and hostile and yelling at me for not signing in and giving me crap about the past and telling me, "You probably never will improve, why are you here?"
Man, so not only do I have to perform in about 20 minutes, but then I go to throw my costume on, and there are cigarette burns all throughout my skirt and belt.....may I add this costume cost me $500!!! So, Im feeling like my dance will suck, my costume looks like shit.....burn hols on white, dont look so hot. Guess what? She was the only person there, that we know of, that smoked. Whats up with that?????????

Re: Burning holes in costumes????
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 12:50 PMHell no, she doesnt live in NJ, thank goddess, I have escaped her and all those damn snobs. I seriously cannot believe any of it either. This happened so long ago, that I dont want to post it all over the place now, but I will send it to the yahoo group for Baltimore, just for future warning, but Im afraid of being asked by too many people who she is.

Re: Burning holes in costumes????
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 9:36 AMActually, if she did it that's a criminal act. I would look into it, see if anyone knows anything.
At the very least, put it out there in your community VERY loudly that this happened to you, that you're looking for who did it (as in, "I was at XX's hafla when it happened and am assuming that a smoker did it, does anyone remember any smokers there?"), and warn others that there's *someone* in the community who is capable of this kind of crime.

Re: Burning holes in costumes????
Wed, January 2, 2008 - 3:57 PMYiiikes...That is nasty!!! I am so glad that something like this hasn't happened to me...[or I'd be jail now].
But Gibs is right about following it up with inquiry and investigation. If you get enough evidence to finger the perpetrator, I would file a claim against her for damages.

Re: Burning holes in costumes????
Thu, January 3, 2008 - 1:47 PMIt is hard to comprehend an adult having such childish behaviour, not to mention the fact that she is supposed to be a professional. It sounds like she has major insecurity issues.
I shake my head... unbelieveable.

Re: Burning holes in costumes????
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 12:57 PMYa know? Ive seen childish behavior out of children, but not one has put out fires on my clothes or costumes!! Not even a child, would go to such lengths! Just a drunk, mean, ego-maniac. And as for "professional", this is a woman who told me, Id never make it. The purple costume in my pics, she told me I looked..."hideous in purple, red heads should never wear that color!" Ummmm, first off, I know Im not a red-head anymore, but I think red-heads, ESPECIALLY look fantastic in purple!!!!!! Ya just gotta watch where you take advice.

Re: Burning holes in costumes????
Sat, January 5, 2008 - 12:26 PMmym mother has stories from the 70's about this one extremely vindictive woman she danced at the same clubs with... she got a hair across her ass about something against another dancer and while the other woman was out dancing she proceeded to cut her bedlah to shreds and I mean beads and sequins EVERYWHERE... and dared her to accuse her. It was craziness and I guess that kinda stuff happened all the time (it happens all the time in pageants and with show girls too)
mean girls are everywhere... -

Sat, January 12, 2008 - 5:40 PMIt's amazing how older/mature people can act like 3 year olds squabbling over a toy. *rolls eyes*

Re: Burning holes in costumes????
Mon, January 14, 2008 - 2:30 PMIt would be awesome if you burn more holes in a cool pattern, then perform in it later.
And thank her for the inspiration on your sweet new costume!

This is totally toungue in cheek
Tue, February 19, 2008 - 6:18 AMI mean really... what a moron. If you're going to be vicious and catty at least do it right. Take a seam ripper to every other stitch holding on the hooks to their top.
;-)
Gah. Amateurs.
-Kidding kidding.
Seriously though. When we're reduced to 'spilling' red wine on someones new silk veil; war has been declared.

Re: Burning holes in costumes????
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 9:12 AMWrong & Disrepctful so many levels. A dancer has a right to stop taking classes, for any reason. Instuctors don't 'own' their students & should respect them as free thinking individuals with rights & personal lives.
Having heard horror stories of cut, clipped, deliberately stained, burned & stolen costumes at dance events, don't ever leave your costume unattended. The grief isn't worth it. This pathetic culprit is guilty of property damage. Prosecutable, when you can prove she did it.
Looked through your photos.. You're a gorgeous dancer & incredibly photogenic.
Venturing a guess...
She's an instructor who begrudgingly gives or entirely withholds praise to wield power over her students. This dance is ALL ABOUT HER / THE TEACHER. How dare you attempt to steal her spot light?! Her glory?! Although she accepted your money just fine. That meant you were the student. Beneath her. Never thinking if she was a good teacher her students will eventually pass her. That's the whole point of teaching.
You dared to escape her control, so she felt the need to lash out and publicly exposed her insecurities. Drunk, hostile and yelling (anger/ control & alcohol issues), projecting "her issues" onto you (incredibly jeolous, feels fat, stagnating dance), then burning holes into an expensive costume (malicious & nasty). You became the recipient of her worst traits & fears.
The best revenge... Be happy and keep dancing.
ps... You know your dance has really improved when your ex-instructor starts spreading horrible gossip :0) Smile and know you're awesome.

Re: Burning holes in costumes????
Mon, March 10, 2008 - 7:02 PMDear heavens CJ, what has gotten into people?
I've heard of nasty things like this happening before, (Artemis has quoted moments like this & others in one of her articles about horrible things dancers do to each other sometimes). There is NO excuse for behavior like this ever. I pity the people that act like that.
It's sad to say you even have to think like this but never leave your items unattended or lock them in a suitcase and dance with the key pinned into your costume if you have to in order to try and prevent anything from happening again.
Horrible....
